Karl’s site is a custom design, and is built upon my favourite platform, WordPress. We chose WordPress because it enables Karl to easily update his site when he’s on the road. He’ll be sending updates throughout the season. There’s a lot of great content to explore as well – I know I learned a lot about equestrian eventing while developing this site. Have a look and let us know what you think.

Congrats, Karl!

I generally try to keep the pontificating to a minimum here (see my Twitter for all the soapbox screaming you can handle) but I felt that the open letter published on Apple.com today, written by Steve Jobs and detailing his thoughts on the controversy surrounding Apple’s stance on Adobe’s Flash on their iPhone OS devices, was worth posting. Jobs takes an uncharacteristically transparent stance, and calmly outlines several points that collectively sum up Apple’s reasons for disallowing Flash or Flash-based apps into the iPhone OS walled garden.

As a designer and developer who appreciates the value that open standards offer for the future of the web, I think Apple’s stance on this issue is valid. Yes, Flash has performance issues on the Mac, and is vaporware on mobile devices, but that’s not really the point. The point, as pointed out by @benmcdowell on Twitter, is that Flash is this decade’s floppy disk, and Apple has drawn the proverbial line in the sand to say that they no longer wish to support dying technology.

I, like all other web developers, have a real stake in the outcome of this little war, which ultimately is why I’m bringing it up in this context. But my money, and my heart, are on truly open standards coming out on top.

Earlier this morning, during one of my thrice-daily checks of versiontracker.com, an app in the list caught my eye. It’s called Layers, and it allows you to take screengrabs of your entire screen (or web pages) and capture each individual element within them as layers in a Photoshop document.

Have you retrieved your jaw from the floor yet? No? It’s okay, I can wait.

Needless to say, this is the sort of tool that could become indispensable for those of us that spend lots of time mocking up site designs in Photoshop. Imagine working on a refresh job for an existing site – one screengrab, and you’ve got all the existing design elements in a PSD, ready to be moved, tweaked, manipulated and massaged.

This is going to save me days worth of work.

Check it out – layersapp.com.

EDIT: Did I mention it’s on sale today only (Nov 27th) for Black Friday?

Barb has been a fixture of the design community in southeast New Brunswick for years, but this is her first proper website, and I couldn’t have been happier to be a part of the launch.

Barb’s got some great holiday announcement cards available as a brand new product for this season, you should really check them out. They’re super fun.

The site design is Barb’s own, and suits her unique aesthetic of clean yet funky. As for my part, I did all the front-end development and WordPress setup.

Congrats, Barb!

I’m happy to announce that a couple weeks ago, we launched a brand new site for Cabral Creative, an exciting new creative firm headed by Nelson Cabral.

Translating Nelson’s brand identity to the web presented a handful of challenges, which we chose to meet head-on. It was vitally important that the dynamic, colourful, and sophisticated identity established in Nelson’s existing print collateral was carried over seamlessly to the web. This meant lots of rich colour, big images, and high-quality execution – all of which can be challenging on the small screen. We chose WordPress as the platform for the site, with lots of custom templating. There’s a little jQuery sprinkled in there too for polish. The result? A truly rich experience, faithful to Nelson’s identity.

Everyone is very pleased with how this site turned out. So go have a look, it’s great! Here’s the link: Cabral Creative [cabralcreative.com]

The site design for the past few months has been a mess, to say the least, and I’m finally getting around to cleaning it up. I’ve just launched a cleaner, meaner, simpler design, stripping site features down to the bare minimum – blog posts and a search form, down there in the footer.

I’ll be adding new features in the next little while as I have time, chief among these being commenting, which I want to really perfect before launching. There are a few other things I’m considering as well, which I’ll hopefully get to before the holidays.

This, like everything on the web these days, is a work in progress. So please, if you find something that looks wonky, or if you just want to let me know what you think, the best way to reach me is Twitter. Once comments are re-implemented, that’ll of course be the best way to give me feedback.

Gosh, this is sorta like getting a haircut… I feel so much better now!

We’ve just wrapped up the first phase of development on a new site for Janet Crawford, a good friend who is just about to release an album of her own songs inspired by the poetry of Douglas Lochhead.

We built this site on WordPress for future flexibility, and for easy content updates in the short term. The development process on this site was unbelievably fast thanks to both WordPress and the 960 Grid System.

Here’s the site: Janet Crawford – Matter of Time [janetcrawford.ca]

There are some samples from her album you should listen to, it’s really beautiful. If you happen to be from Sackville, you’ll especially love this. You can order a CD from her site, or wait a few weeks for the album to show up on the iTunes Music Store. Either way, you won’t be disappointed.

We’ll be adding some more content in the future, so keep your eyes open.

Congratulations, Janet!
